Opening Night Report: Fulton Market Kitchen in the West Loop

On Friday, new West Loop hot spot Fulton Market Kitchen unveiled 6,000 sq. ft. of fine food and bold art. Conceptualized and co-designed by Daniel Alonso (Black Bull), the restaurant and lounge highlight the work of local artists and the cuisine of executive chef James Gottwald (Monti's, Sunda and Rockit) and chef de cuisine Kyle Petersen (Ceres' Table and Naha). The chefs and bartenders were faced with a unique task: to create menus that hold their own against the vibrant environment. A long black-and-white tiled hallway, exposed-brick walls, concrete facades and a red mural of a woman riding a motorcycle are just some of the bold design elements that greet guests. From there, each of the s

Fulton Market Kitchen May Be Chicago’s Coolest-Looking Bar

A bar with art on the walls is one thing, but at brand-new restaurant/lounge hybrid Fulton Market Kitchen (311 N. Sangamon St., West Loop, 312-733-6900) the place is a work of art in and of itself. After you enter through the red-and-black-painted door, it’s full-on aesthetic overload. There are street-art-inspired murals, pop portraits of Batman, wooden boats dangling from the ceiling, and a bar back made of stacked chairs. Partner Alex Morales lovingly calls the look “controlled chaos.” The eclectic vibe extends to the drink menu, where you’ll find the Ecto Non-Cooler, an homage to the Hi-C flavor of yore (Vida mezcal, lime Jarritos soda, and a spicy salted rim), and the Beetlejuice Beetle

What's on the Menu at Fulton Market Kitchen, Opening Tonight

Yesterday you saw the art-themed Fulton Market Kitchen space, today you see the art-themed menu. Executive chef James Gottwald (Monti's, Sunda, Rockit) and chef de cuisine Kyle Petersen (Ceres' Table, Naha) have put together a creative contemporary menu filled with many trendy items done in new ways. Starters, small plates and large plates include "Goldfish for Two" (whole fried red snapper), "Two Tails" (pig and lobster), and "Ravioli and Foie." Beverage selections feature four sections of cocktails and an extensive wine list. -Daniel Gerzina [http://chicago.eater.com/2014/3/21/6258121/whats-on-the-menu-at-fulton-market-kitchen-opening-tonight]

Art and Appetite A Restaurant That’s Also an Art Gallery

For a second, imagine a world without art. Terrible. Now, imagine a world without food. Probably worse. Now, imagine a world without bars that serve eight types of boilermakers. Definitely worse. So stop imagining such awful, awful things. Just feel secure that Fulton Market Kitchen, a lavishly appointed restaurant/lounge/art gallery, opens Friday in the Warehouse District. It’s in the former Victor Hotel space, which means it had a pretty tough act to follow, decor-wise. Yet somehow, once you throw around a few buttery-soft leather couches, strike a deal with the art gallery next door for a rotating lineup of edgy work from local artists and cover every square inch of the lounge w

Fulton Market Kitchen Aims to Feature Great Food and Fine Art

FULTON RIVER DISTRICT — A new restaurant opening at 311 N. Sangamon St. later this month hopes to expose its patrons to great food and fine art, with roots at Ceres' Table, Sunda, Rockit, Naha and more. Fulton Market Kitchen is set to open March 21. Early images of the space and menu showcase a gritty dining room with exposed brick and pipes, a more refined lounge area stocked with tufted leather sofas, and an ingredient-driven menu centered on meat and seafood. Daniel Alonso, who designed the space, said in a written statement that the vision was to build an "artist-friendly and collaborative channel for the vibrant local art community." The restaurant and lounge will rotate its artwork eve

Fulton Market Kitchen to Open Soon, Just Off Fulton Market

Following in the misnomer tradition established by its predecessor in the space, the not-actually-a-hotel Victor Hotel, Fulton Market Kitchen (311 N. Sangamon St., 312-733-6100) has its front door a few steps up from Fulton Market on Sangamon Street. The global-contemporary restaurant is scheduled to open March 21. Daniel Alonso (Black Bull currently, Hubbard Inn formerly) and Alex Morales conceived of the space as an art haven, exhibiting the work of local artists in the 110-seat dining room. Those who remember the Victor Hotel as a project of the ebulliently decorative restaurateur Jerry Kleiner can imagine the high-ceilinged, gallerylike setting. The executive chef, James Gottwald (One Si

A Look Inside Fulton Market’s Newest Kitchen

Another restaurant is getting ready to open its doors in West Town, and the owners are so proud of their space that they sent over some pictures of the decor. Fulton Market Kitchen (311 North Sangamon Street) is scheduled to open on Friday, March 21st. We’d like to tell you what kind of food to expect, but we won’t for two reasons. First, because we’re an architecture blog and are only mentioning this because the pictures Fulton Market’s PR firm sent over are pretty cool. And secondly, because the press release doesn’t actually say. Or maybe it does and we didn’t see it. You can wade through the superfluous superlatives for hints below the photo gallery.
